RCL Reflection for Holy Trinity Sunday, Year B, May 30, 2021
Our job as leaders, teachers, and preachers is to show the wondrous love of God beyond all knowing, trusting that the Divine One in Three and Three in One will indeed capture the hearts, minds, and lives of all who come to know the unknowable. Why would we settle for anything less?
Welcome to the wild, wonderful, wet family!
RCL Reflection for the Baptism of the Lord, Year B, January 10, 2021
In Jesus’ own baptism his ministry is inaugurated, and in doing so the church comes into being through water and word—one big wild, wet, welcoming family. We all can make an effort to remember our own gift of baptism every day and to give thanks for the life-giving gift of water that God proclaimed good.
Jesus H2O
RCL Reflection, Baptism of the Lord, Year A, January 12, 2020
Without water there is no lasting life on this earth. Christ, in his baptism, shows us what is fitting and proper, sort of a Jesus H2O, if you will. After all, human beings are about 66% water, and 70% of the human brain is water. Make this a day to celebrate baptism and walk wet into the world. (Photo: Dmitry Kichenko, Creative Commons)
Listening to God
RCL reflection, Baptism of our Lord, Year C, Jan. 13, 2019
This Sunday may be a good opportunity to explore the gift of baptism not so much as a remembrance but rather as an opportunity to listen to God. What makes it difficult to listen to God in our 21st century world? What gets in the way? (Photo: vncepal, Creative Commons)
All in the Family
Holy Trinity Sunday, Year B, May 27, 2018
The good news of Holy Trinity Sunday is that we have a highly relational God who desires us to have real life, and have it abundantly. We are, according to Paul, “adopted as God’s children,” no longer slaves destined to be fearful. How much our world needs this message of hope today! Let’s be good stewards and share liberally. Wild Goose on the Loose
Lectionary Reflection for the Baptism of our Lord, Year B, January 7, 2018
This Sunday we have water and Jesus and a wild-honking-goose-of-a-Holy-Spirit clattering through our organized worship and over-booked lives. Yes, that Holy Spirit that descended on Jesus in the Jordan in Mark’s gospel account is on the loose and ready to take you along for the ride of your life. Are you ready to go? Walk Wet and Share the Good News
Baptism of our Lord, Year A, January 8, 2017
This week’s gospel is a great springboard to remember and give thanks for your baptism, but don’t stop there! We have good news to share as we walk wet in this world. (Photo: Adam Witwer, Creative Commons)
Lament, Repent, Relent
Lectionary Reflection for the Baptism of our Lord, Year C, January 10, 2016
This Sunday’s lessons, combined with recent events, offers preachers and teachers a real opportunity to “wade deeper” into the waters of our baptismal identity. We also have ideas for time with children and youth. (Photo: THX0477, Creative Commons)
How Can These Things NOT Be?
Holy Trinity Sunday, Year B, May 31, 2015
This is the Sunday where it’s tempting to rehash and explain away the truly inexplicable nature of God and the concept of the Trinity: God in three persons. God in three essences. God in three expressions. Good luck with that! Why not simply tell the story of God’s relational nature and abiding and life-giving love? (Photo: A Davey, Creative Commons )
A Holy, Wholly Relational God
Holy Trinity Sunday, June 3, 2012
Lectionary Reflection
Are you ready to experience and embrace the holy and untamed Triune God? Will you and those you serve be sent willingly into this beautiful, broken world to serve and love?
