RCL Reflection, 5th Sunday of Easter, Year A. May 7, 2023.
We often hear the comforting words of this week’s Gospel at funerals, but there’s much more to it. Jesus is talking about relationship. The Rev. Elisabeth Hartwell explores. (Photo: Oregon State University, creative commons)
Inconvenienced? Or all-in?
RCL Reflection, Fifth Sunday of Easter, Year A, May 10, 2020
Spirit-led and Jesus-fed, we can choose to march out of our COVID-19 sheltering as true resurrection people, the beloved community set loose in the world to do the work of Christ. The alternative is to fall backward into a reality that no longer exists, into despair and defeat. So let’s be bold, and all-in! (Photo: Becker1999, Creative Commons)
Once Upon a Time…or Now?
Revised Common Lectionary Reflection for the Fifth Sunday of Easter, Year A, May 14, 2017
Just what does it really mean to be God’s people? How do we explain ourselves in today’s world to people who see what we do as weird, antiquated, or inaccessible? These are questions we need to ask one another frequently and ponder well. Yes, we have received mercy, and yes, we belong to God, but now what? And what does this have to do with stewardship anyway? Stewards of the Promise (Part Two)
To be a steward of Jesus’ bold promise in this week’s reading implies that we will fully invest ourselves in passing on the faith, in sharing the story, and in continuing the work of Christ. In doing so we align our wills to Christ’s will, and as his body visible today we boldly carry his message to the world. (Photo by Charles Clegg, used by Creative Commons license)
That was Then; This is Now
5th Sunday in Easter, Year A, May 22, 2011
What would your life be like if you were not a Christian? Do you remember a time before your baptism? Communicating the difference between then and now, between what was, what is, and what could be is of paramount importance in sharing the faith.
