Climate change fueled the fury of hurricanes Helene and Milton
Two new studies link abnormally hot water in the Gulf of Mexico to the storms’ intensity

Hurricane Milton, shown here bearing down on Florida on October 9, was supercharged by anomalously warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico. Earlier in its development, it had “explosively” strengthened from a Category 1 to a Category 5 hurricane in less than 24 hours, though it’s expected to weaken, but only slightly, before landfall.
